The chemistry that cleans a neighbor's driveway can harm travertine
Travertine is a porous limestone formed primarily from calcium carbonate. Its natural movement, color and voids make it attractive around pools and lanais, but its composition also requires material-specific care. Travertine is a calcium-based stone that can be etched or damaged by acidic cleaners.
Some products used to remove mineral deposits or rust from concrete are inappropriate for natural stone. HydroSeal evaluates the material, stains and any existing coating before choosing a stone-compatible cleaner, concentration and dwell time.
Etching is damage, not surface dirt
Acid exposure can react with calcium carbonate and leave dull spots, roughness or changed texture. Etching is physical surface damage rather than ordinary staining. Cleaning will not remove lost material, and sealing may not conceal the affected areas.
Correction may require professional honing, refinishing or stone replacement, depending on the depth and extent of the damage. Testing in an inconspicuous location helps reduce avoidable surprises during travertine cleaning and sealing.

Outdoor travertine must be able to manage moisture
A heavy film-forming coating can create problems
An incompatible or overly heavy film-forming coating can contribute to trapped moisture, clouding, adhesion problems or surface deterioration on outdoor travertine. Water can enter through joints, edges, the setting bed, pool splash and irrigation, then move back toward the surface as vapor.
A coating with unsuitable vapor-transmission characteristics may interfere with that movement. Existing coatings, drainage, exposure and dry-down must be considered before travertine resealing.
Spalling can have more than one cause
Spalling can be associated with trapped moisture, freeze-thaw exposure, salt movement, stone quality, installation conditions or incompatible coatings. Flaking should be diagnosed before a new product is applied rather than attributed to one cause without inspection.
HydroSeal generally recommends breathable penetrating products for outdoor travertine after evaluating the stone, existing coatings, exposure and moisture conditions. A breathable penetrating sealer can reduce absorption while allowing water vapor to move through the assembly.
Filled travertine

Travertine contains natural voids. Many outdoor tiles are factory-filled to create a more even walking surface, but fill can loosen as the deck ages and is exposed to water, traffic, weather or aggressive cleaning.
Cleaning pressure should be controlled
Excessive pressure can loosen or remove factory fill, damage softer stone and leave visible cleaning marks. Travertine can still be cleaned with controlled pressure, appropriate tips and proper distance; chemistry and dwell time should do most of the work.
Inspect fill before sealing

Finish choice
Enhancing sealer makes travertine look richer — and may make it hotter
A natural finish keeps the stone closer to its current light, matte appearance. An enhancing finish deepens color variation and can create a richer look without necessarily creating a surface film.
Enhancing products darken the stone and may increase surface heat in direct sun compared with a lighter natural finish. HydroSeal can provide a test patch so the homeowner can compare appearance before selecting a finish. The actual stone, exposure and wet-area use should guide product choice.

Reclaimed irrigation water can leave iron or mineral staining where overspray reaches coping, patios and screened lanais. Rust treatment on travertine requires stone-compatible products and careful testing because many standard acidic rust removers can etch calcium-based stone.
Screen enclosures and shaded sides of a home often dry more slowly. Persistent moisture can support algae and organic growth, particularly at cage edges, planters and low-drainage areas. Screened lanai travertine sealing should account for airflow, shade and actual surface moisture before application.
